First stop – Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire

Before Gustav Holst sailed to Salonica he attended a training camp at Welbeck Abbey, a stately home in Nottinghamshire. He describes his time in Nottinghamshire in a letter to his friend Whittaker, written in September 1918:

 

I’m going with the YMCA to Salonica for a year – it is a special educational mission. In order to be of more use I am dropping the ‘von’. I’m here under canvas and in mud learning my job.

There is not much information about Welbeck Abbey in WW1. This is something I intend to research more in preparation for the exhibition in 2018.
