On Tuesday I will begin a journey into Gustav Holst’s past. It’s true that I spend a lot of my time delving into Holst’s life, although this time I am searching for his story in Thessaloniki, which he knew as Salonica. Next year is the centenary of Holst becoming Musical Organiser for the YMCA, teaching music to the soldiers on the Macedonian Front which had its administrative centre in Salonica. The Holst Birthplace Museum will be mounting a very special exhibition to celebrate his contribution to the war effort. Thanks to a Jonathan Ruffer Grant from the Art Fund I will be taking part in a Salonica Battlefield Tour for 5 days. This will give me a real insight into Holst’s time in Greece and hopefully how it shaped him as a person and a composer.
